Founded on the idea that you can combine success, contribution and fun, the Austin Young Professionals Network aims to “empower young professionals who want to grow, contribute, and chase greatness.”
Alec Rios founded the organization as a full-fledged event/media company and non-profit advocate, exemplifying that real fulfillment comes from service and being around a community of like-minded people, not necessarily building as many businesses as possible.
“I’ve been an entrepreneur working crazy hours since I was 18 years old. For years I was so ‘tunnel vision’ aiming towards success that I cut pretty much everything else out of my life that didn’t have to do with work,” explains Mr. Rios. “It wasn’t until I moved to Austin 5 years ago that I realized you can be highly productive in this life, but also have a blast while doing it!”
Alec’s journey has not been without its challenges, however. For example, his determination and fortitude were tested in the beginning, when he was attempting to breathe life into his concept. How could he make the most significant impact when he doesn’t even have a team? He had the blueprint for the machine but no cogs to make it work.
When asked how he addressed this he states, “I had a friend of mine John Castillo who has been helping since the beginning.” He continues, “I overcame it by comparing myself to Elon Musk. When he was starting SpaceX he didn’t have anyone to fill the role of Lead Rocket Engineer, so he decided to become it, without any prior rocket experience. I told myself ‘If Elon can figure out rocket science, John and I can learn canva, social media, and all the other things it takes to run and document events.’”
Since then, YPN has added many other roles. One of the most vital roles for their growth is Director of Communications, held by Troy Abbott. He wears many hats, and his efforts have been instrumental to the growth of YPN. Outside of YPN, Troy is also a very well-connected sommelier in the Austin, Texas wine community.
Years later, in the saturated space of networking events, and professional mixers, the Young Professionals Network can pride itself on being distinguishable from the pack. One of the factors that differentiates YPN is the intention of providing “unreasonable hospitality.” The team constantly focuses on how they can provide unreasonable value at their events. They want their attendees to walk away feeling as if they would have paid 4 times the cost of admission to any of their events.
Founders, incredible non-profit leaders, 7-8 figure entrepreneurs, and local influencers consistently show up to YPN events. This community is drawn to “The Network” by upscale venue selections, the activities during the events, and the work behind the scenes to ensure a quality guest list. Everything is facilitated extremely well and the organization also partners with local businesses such as Top Golf and others, making for experiences to be remembered.
Passionate about community and bringing kindred spirits together, Alec also made sure to incorporate making a contribution to the greater good into his mission. YPN has worked with Backpack Friends, and helped raise enough food to feed 100+ children They had a successful Toydrive during Christmas for Dads Assisting Dads, and in November they helped run a gala for the Best Day Ever Foundation that played a role in securing the funding they needed to kick off 2026.
Under the leadership of Alec Rios, YPN is now the fastest growing professional network in Austin. It’s no wonder, considering the man, himself. A firm handshake, an infectious smile, a cheerful countenance and an interesting conversation are a few things you can look forward to when first meeting Alec. His work and the work of the Young Professionals Network is instrumental in inspiring and empowering the new generation of business leaders; sharing resources, connecting the dots, and remaining intent on enriching each other’s lives. Fulfilling and meaningful work, indeed.
